Really a lie.  This image shows the United states as a desert wasteland form sea to shining sea.  If you live anywhere it shows as a vast desert, look outside and I’m fairly certain you will see more trees there than “pictured” here.  For another thing, look at the size of the continents: somehow the North American continent is much larger on the same sized sphere in 2012 than it was in 1978.  The gulf coast (the flat spot between Texas and Florida) in 2012 is somehow nearly twice as long as it was in 1978.

To see what the forest really look like now, take a look at http://maps.google.com/  You may notice that there actually seem to be more forested land today than in the 1978 image pictured above.
